Setting up a YouTube business can turn out to be successful one if you know what you need to do. We’ll look at the conditions and criteria to start monetizing your YouTube content in a different article and only focus on what you need to do before you can get to the stage of monetizing content.

Equipping yourself with the skills required for business success is an essential part of starting an online business of your own. We reviewed some of these skills in an earlier article (Can You Really Succeed in Internet marketing without These?) and in this article we’ll narrow down to a few of these skills focused on video marketing.

Skill 1: On-Camera Presentation

Trust me when I tell you that presenting Live and on Camera are two very different experiences. I have years of Live presentation experience, but very few on camera. I was confident in my presentation skills but was aghast when I couldn’t do the same on camera the very first time I tried. What went wrong?

I wasn’t prepared.

It’s a different story for me today. I’m as comfortable on camera as I am with Live presentations.

You will need to invest in good video equipment and a sturdy tripod. Your picture quality should be good. They say that people look at usefulness of content over the presentation of content — but that’s not totally true. It is most beneficial if you can get the presentation and quality of content to a top-notch level.

Your takeaway from this is that if you are planning to start your own YouTube business you need to start getting comfortable on camera as this will become an essential part of your business setup.

Skill 2: Video Editing

The modern generation likes short content that’s value-packed. Less than 10 minutes per video is a good timeframe. So, how do you get a 2-hour training lesson to be crammed up into 10 minutes? Editing.

How do you develop this skill? It’s only with practice. Get some free software like OpenShot or VSDC Editor and try editing some videos that you’ve shot. Learn the basic functions of the editing process — split, extend, overlay, transition, picture-in-picture, and render. It’s best to try the NLP editors (non-linear processing). Over time you will find yourself creating great videos for consumption.

The best videos on YouTube are those that are short, engaging, and informative. That should be your goal too.

Your takeaway from this is that if you want your videos to be seen and shared keep your content short, crisp, and engaging. Ensure that there is value in every second of your video. For example, cut out (or shorten) any section of the video that has you waiting on screen for a process to complete.

There’s a lot more to discuss on this topic, but we’ll save that for another article. Until then, wish you all the best!
