Can You Really Succeed in Internet Marketing Without These?

Everybody has regrets. It’s part of human experience. But, when these regrets result in losses or failure, these regrets soon become challenges that need to be overcome. As an Internet Marketer, I’ve experienced a major regret and wished I’d known the information I’m sharing with you a year ago.

Let’s get to some basic questions.

  • Are you tired of not making any money online?
  • Have you tried multiple methods and still failed?
  • Have you been on a buying spree, getting your hands on every new ‘shiny object’ (software and tools) in the hope that they can make you some money?
  • Did any of these work?
  • Do you regret any of these investments?

If you’re reading this, chances are that you haven’t been successful at it — yet. Don’t worry; you’ve some to the right article.

In this article we will learn the basic techniques, tips and strategies every new (and seasoned) marketer needs to know. Like I said, I wish I knew these a year ago — my life would probably have been a lot better. Anyway, let’s see how we can make yours better!

With a little research you may realize that the three basic principles of a successful marketer are: knowledge, skills and attitude. These three, put together, are known as competency. We’ll review each of these in this article.

Knowledge Gained Through Learning

Don’t ever fall into the trap of thinking that you know everything! You might have 15 years of experience in a particular industry (like I had in the digital marketing industry) and think you know everything you need to start a successful business. Believe me — you can’t be farther from the truth. Even the greatest marketer or the richest person on earth still invests in learning.

Simply put, knowledge is what you know. In this case, it is what you need to know to succeed in setting up an online business.

So, what should you learn? Here’re some tips for your learning journey.

  • Invest in courses that teach you the basics of marketing. This should include general marketing and cover digital marketing subjects as well. You will find a plethora of courses on Udemy, Coursera and Skillshare that will help you with this.
  • Invest in courses that teach you how to achieve a particular internet marketing goal in a step-by-step fashion.
  • Invest in courses that teach you how to set up a website of your own.
  • Look for courses that help you become a specialist in one or more areas of internet marketing.

Skills are Equivalent to Tools

The second important principle you need to develop is your skill. It’s good to have knowledge about marketing, but without the skill to implement the knowledge you will get nowhere.

Now, there are shortcuts to getting things done (even on the skills side) — but, I’d say it is best to leave that part to when you yourself have mastered the necessary skills. So, what are these skills?

  • Website Design. This skill is not as complicated as it may sound. There was a time when it would have been a pretty intensive job requiring knowledge of HTML and web design software, but in the present times it’s as easy as having a good eye for color and design — the rest of the work can be done in drag and drop methods. The best platform to start out will be WordPress.
  • Hosting and Managing your Domains and Website. There are a lot of hosting platforms out there and choosing the best one for you (especially as a newbie) can be daunting.   • Copywriting. Wondering what this is? It’s nothing but another name for business communication. Email writing, sales page content, ad copy creation and website content require this skill. You may have developed a beautiful website, but if you don’t fill it with content no one will ever find you. Again, let me reiterate — it is good to learn at least the basic skills so that even if you hire someone to do this for you, you can audit the output and ask for customization based on your knowledge.
  • Search Engine Optimization. This is an important skill to have in your kitty. All content on the WWW is subject to SEO rules. Firstly, you need to understand SEO in theory, then you need to know how to implement it for your website. This is very important if you want to rank high in the organic search results.
  • Analytical Skills. These skills are generally overlooked, but they are very important. After all, all your strategic decisions for your business depend on the insights gained from analyzing data that has been captured on your website or analytics software. Don’t ignore these.
  • Presentation Skills. At some point or the other you will be involved in Live streams, webinars or video presentations. You need to develop your presentation skills for all these situations. This includes presentation design (PPT or any similar software), and presentation (your appearance on-screen, tone and fluency of communication).
  • Video Creation. Video marketing is an essential component of online marketing. If you want to launch your business onto the success track, video is necessary. You need to know how to shoot, edit and create videos for easy consumption. Your focus should be on the quality of the content (which is where copywriting skill can come in handy) and presentation of the material in an engaging, captivating and motivating manner.

The list of skills can go on and on, but’ I’ll leave you to think about these to start with. Let’s look at the attitudes.

Positive Mindset

This principle is commonly known as mindset. There are so many coaches who are constantly putting out content to help entrepreneurs achieve the ‘winning mindset’. Well, you can achieve it without going to a coach (if that’s what you want). The principle is very simple.

Stay positive.

If you want to know what the #1 attitude of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world (including history) is, it’s this: Never Give Up!

Challenges will be there. You will have days when not a single sale happens. That could turn into weeks! But, it is your approach to the problem that can spell the difference between success and failure.

Don’t panic when you face difficult situations. For example, I was happy that my drop shipping business was slowly picking up pace late last year (2020). Then the second wave of Covid-19 happened. Flights were cancelled. Countries set up restrictions. People went indoors. Fear of the virus increased. Online purchases stopped. My business took a hit.

USPS was my shipping partner and they got into a bad place due to lower number of staff compared to the number of packages to be shipped. Many of my orders got delayed — by 2–3 weeks! My customers were not happy. They started asking for refunds. And I had to refund them.

In a span of 3 weeks I had losses to the tune of $1,500. That was huge, but I could do nothing about it. I moved on.

That’s exactly how you will need to approach tough situations. Stay calm, be positive, practice self-motivation and always have a backup plan.

The secret to a successful internet marketing career (and making money online) starts with developing your KSA — knowledge, skills and attitude. Do note that this is a continuous learning process and as you keep growing, so should your investment into KSA.
